The Dino 196 S, the first sports racer under the Dino marque, debuted with two models: s/n 0740 (1958) and s/n 0776 (1959). Both featured a 2.0L V6 engine. Each engine had a capacity of 1,983.72 cc and produced 195 PS (143 kW; 192 hp) through three 42DCN Weber carburetors. The cars differed in rpm range and spark plug arrangements. Built on a tubular chassis with independent front suspension and a live rear axle, the first car had Scaglietti coachwork, later rebodied by Fantuzzi, who also designed the second car's body, reminiscent of the Ferrari 250 TR. The 196 S debuted at the Goodwood Sussex Trophy, achieving second place. It underwent a transformation to SOHC, earning a victory at the Coppa Sant Ambroeus and another second place at the Pontedecimo-Giovi hillclimb before being dismantled. The second car, enjoying a longer career, secured top finishes in Nassau's Governor's Trophy and seventh overall at the Targa Florio.
