Timeline

The 1960 Ferrari Dino 246 S, with only two models built (s/n 0778 and 0784), featured a 60° V6 engine derived from the Ferrari 246 F1, but with a chain-driven, single overhead camshaft design. This 2.4L engine produced 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp) using three Weber 42DCN carburetors. Notable as the last front-engine Dino sports racer, it had a steel tube chassis, independent front suspension, a live axle rear, and all-round disc brakes. Fantuzzi designed the bodies, with 0784 uniquely rebodied as a 'high tail' spider. The 246 S debuted at the 1000km Buenos Aires but faced early ignition issues. It achieved notable success at the 1960 Targa Florio, finishing second and fourth. After a pit fire, s/n 0778 was rebuilt at Ferrari, and both cars later competed in the United States, with s/n 0784 winning its class at the 1961 12 Hours of Sebring.
