Timeline

The Ferrari 156, made in 1961, adhered to new Formula One rules limiting engine displacement to 1.5 litres. Nicknamed "sharknose" for its unique air intake design, it was pivotal in Ferrari winning the 1961 World Championship of Drivers with Phil Hill and the International Cup for F1 Manufacturers. Originally equipped with a 65-degree Dino engine, it was later updated to a smoother 120-degree V6 engine, increasing power slightly. The 156 saw continuous development, including a planned 4-valve version and a six-speed transmission variant. However, the model is also remembered for the tragic 1961 Italian Grand Prix accident involving driver Wolfgang von Trips and a collision that resulted in multiple fatalities.
