The 1962 Ferrari 196 SP, a variation of the 246 SP, was equipped with a smaller 2.0-litre V6 engine but retained the transmission, chassis, brakes, and suspension of the 246 SP. Initially, only one chassis (s/n 0804) existed, with three more (0790, 0802, 0806) later converted to 196 SP specifications. The 196 SP's contributions were notable, with driver Ludovico Scarfiotti clinching the 1962 European Hill Climb Championship and achieving class wins in the 1962 and 1963 Targa Florio. This model featured a single overhead camshaft, 210 PS power output, and a distinctive Fantuzzi bodywork with twin front air intakes. Chassis 0804 particularly stood out, performing well in various races and contributing significantly to Ferrari's competitive success in hill climbs and endurance racing. The 196 SP's design and performance exemplified Ferrari's adaptability and prowess in early 1960s motorsports.
