The Dino 196 S, launched in 1958, was the first sports racing car under the Dino marque, featuring a 2.0 L Dino V6 engine. Built on a tubular chassis, the first car had Scaglietti coachwork, later re-bodied by Fantuzzi, who also bodied the second car, both reminiscent of the Ferrari 250 TR. The first Dino 196 S debuted at the Goodwood Sussex Trophy, finishing second, and later achieved a victory at Coppa Sant Ambroeus. Its racing career ended with a second place at the 1959 Pontedecimo-Giovi hillclimb. The second Dino had a longer racing history, performing well in various events including the Targa Florio, where it finished seventh overall. Despite being Dino-branded, these early sports cars bore Ferrari badges.
