Timeline

The Ferrari 246 P, a Formula One prototype car used by Ferrari in 1960, marked a significant shift in design philosophy as Ferrari's first mid-engined car. Its development, led by Carlo Chiti, was a response to the disappointing performance of its predecessor, the Ferrari 246, and the rising success of mid-engined cars from Cooper and Lotus. The 246 P made only two World Championship appearances, with its best result being a fifth place at the 1960 Italian Grand Prix. Initially struggling with a tail-heavy weight distribution, it debuted at the 1960 Monaco Grand Prix, retiring due to a differential failure but still classified sixth. Later, the car served as a development mule for a revised V6 engine, competing in the Formula Two class, where it notably won the Formula Two Solitude Grand Prix.
