Timeline

The Ferrari 248 SP, unveiled in 1962, was a notable development in the SP series, being equipped with Ferrari's first fully in-house developed 90° V8 engine. This 2.4-litre engine, designed by Carlo Chiti, featured a single overhead camshaft and was initially fitted with unique Weber carburetors. However, these were later replaced for better performance. Only two 248 SP models were produced, both eventually modified into the larger displacement 268 SP models. The engine's design, while innovative, did not lead to any direct successors. In its brief racing tenure, the 248 SP saw limited action; one of the cars participated in the 12 Hours of Sebring, finishing thirteenth overall and third in its class. This limited racing involvement and quick evolution into the 268 SP model underscore the 248 SP's transitional role in Ferrari's sports prototype development.
