The Ferrari 286 SP, introduced at the 1962 press conference, was a unique model in the SP series, sharing design similarities with the 196 SP and the revised 1962 246 SP, especially in terms of the updated bodywork to meet new regulations. Only one example of the 286 SP was produced and it never participated in racing. Presented to the press in February, it was converted into the 268 SP by May of the same year. The car featured a large-capacity, 60° Dino V6 engine, unique for its wider bore and longer stroke, resulting in a displacement of 2.9 liters. Despite producing 260 PS at 6800 rpm through a combination of a 9.5:1 compression ratio and three Weber carburetors, the 286 SP's V6 engine was soon replaced in favor of the new V8 engines designed by Carlo Chiti, leading to the model having no direct successor.
