The Ferrari 288 GTO, produced from 1984 to 1987, is a rare and exotic homologation of the Ferrari 308 GTB. Designed by Pininfarina, the 288 GTO began as a modified 308/328 but evolved significantly during development. Its exclusivity is underlined by its limited production run, meeting the FIA's minimum requirement of 200 units but adding a few more for special requests. The 288 GTO's 2.9 L V8 engine, enhanced with twin turbochargers and intercoolers, was mounted longitudinally for improved racing performance. This layout contributed to its exceptional performance, with the GTO being one of the fastest street-legal cars of its time, boasting a top speed of 189 mph. Additionally, Ferrari built six 288 GTO Evoluzione models with even more power and aggressive aerodynamics. These models, intended for Group B racing, never raced due to the series' cancellation but influenced the design of the iconic Ferrari F40.
