The Ferrari 290 S, crafted in 1957, was a notable but brief chapter in Ferrari's racing story. A development of the successful 290 MM, it was the first Ferrari sports car equipped with a DOHC V12 engine, designed by Vittorio Jano. This engine incorporated elements from Lancia's Formula One V8 and was housed in an unmodified chassis from the 290 MM. Despite its technical advancements and the updated Scaglietti spyder body to meet new FIA regulations, the 290 S did not replicate its predecessor's racing success. Only two were made, and both were later converted to the larger displacement 315 S, reflecting its transitional role in Ferrari's evolution.
