Timeline

In the 1966 Formula One season, responding to new regulations allowing 3-litre engines, Ferrari introduced a car with a 3.3-litre V12 engine, downsized to 3000cc, from the Ferrari 275P2 sportscar. This engine, mounted in an F1 chassis, led to the 312 designation, representing a 3-litre, 12-cylinder engine. The engine's weight and reduced capacity resulted in lower power and torque. John Surtees initially drove this car, winning the Belgian Grand Prix, but left the team mid-season due to disagreements. His replacement, Mike Parkes, and Ludovico Scarfiotti, who won the Italian Grand Prix, contributed to Ferrari finishing second in the Constructors' Championship. This period was marked by internal challenges and external pressure from competitors like Ford in sports car racing.
