Timeline

In 1979, responding to advancements in aerodynamics and competition from Lotus, Ferrari introduced the 312T4. Debuted at the South African Grand Prix, it was based on the 312T3 but adapted for ground effect aerodynamics, a challenge due to the design limitations imposed by the wide flat 12 engine. The 312T4's design, more of a wing car akin to the Lotus 78, featured a narrow monocoque to maximize ground effect benefits. The car proved exceptionally reliable, with only one mechanical retirement, and secured six race wins (three each for drivers Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter). These victories, along with consistent performances, helped Ferrari win the Constructors' Championship and Scheckter the Drivers' Championship in 1979. Scheckter was gifted the championship-winning 312T4, which he drove at the 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix weekend for Formula One's 60th anniversary.
