The 1980 Formula One season was challenging for Ferrari, marked by the introduction of the 312T5, an update of the previous year's 312T4. However, the car was unable to compete effectively against the aerodynamic advances made by rivals using Cosworth DFV engines. Ferrari's wide "Boxer" engine design hindered the 312T5's aerodynamics, contributing to its lack of pace and reliability issues. Unlike competitors' cars that improved throughout the season, the 312T5's development stagnated, resulting in diminishing competitiveness. Ferrari experienced a winless season for the first time since 1973, finishing a disappointing 10th in the Constructors' Championship. Jody Scheckter, the team's lead driver, struggled significantly, failing to qualify in Canada and earning only 2 points before retiring at season's end. The 312T5 was replaced by the entirely new 126CK for the 1981 season.
