Timeline

The Ferrari 312T6, a six-wheeled prototype, was developed with an unconventional design featuring four rear tires on a single axle. This experimental model followed the trend of six-wheeled vehicles in Formula One, notably after the Tyrrell P34. However, unlike the Tyrrell which had four small front wheels, the 312T6 utilized four standard-sized rear wheels. Tested by Niki Lauda and Carlos Reutemann in 1977, the 312T6 never made it to a race. Its width exceeded the regulatory limits, and it presented significant driving challenges. Notably, during a test at the Fiorano track, Reutemann crashed the 312T6, leading to the vehicle catching fire. The car also experienced a rear upright failure on another occasion. Reutemann reportedly had a negative impression of the 312T6, contributing to its retirement from development.
