Timeline

In July 1950, Ferrari replaced the 275 with the 340 F1 at the Grand Prix of Nations in Geneva. The 340 F1 featured a larger 4.1-litre version of Lampredi's V12 engine and introduced several updates, including a new de Dion tube rear suspension from the 166 F2 car and a four-speed gearbox. Despite having a longer wheelbase of 2,420 mm, its other dimensions were unchanged. Producing 335 hp, the car, driven by Ascari, demonstrated competitive pace against Juan Manuel Fangio's Alfa Romeo 158, but ultimately retired due to engine trouble. The 340 F1 was a significant but intermediate step in Ferrari's car development for the 1950 racing season.
