Timeline

The Ferrari 408 4RM, a prototype developed by Ferrari in 1987, was a notable milestone as the first Ferrari to incorporate four-wheel drive. This innovative system, however, was deemed too heavy for Ferrari's performance standards, adding 200 kg to the car's weight, and was not pursued in subsequent models until the Ferrari FF in 2011. Only two prototypes were built, featuring distinct designs: the first with a red all-steel welded chassis and the second with a yellow aluminum frame. The 408 4RM's name reflects its 4.0 L engine displacement and 8 cylinders, while "4RM" stands for "4 Ruote Motrici" or four-wheel drive. The car, powered by a 90° 4.0 litre V8 engine, featured on the cover of Road & Track magazine in December 1988.
