The Ferrari 500 Mondial, developed from Lampredi's four-cylinder engine experiments, was named to honor Alberto Ascari's world championships. Featuring a 2.0 L Lampredi engine in a lightweight body with advanced suspension, it debuted at the 1953 12 Hours of Casablanca, placing second. In the 1954 Mille Miglia, its best result was second overall, and it remained competitive through the decade, even racing in 1962. The engine, derived from the 500 F2, produced 170 hp in a car weighing 720 kg, with de Dion tube rear suspension for superior handling. Initially, Pinin Farina bodied the spiders, followed by Scaglietti's barchettas and two Pinin Farina berlinettas. In total, 29 were built, including 13 Pininfarina spiders with 5 being Series I with covered headlights. The 500 Mondial won the Gran Turismo Trophy at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
