The Ferrari 512 BB LM, produced starting in 1978, was a purpose-built competition version of the BB 512. It came in two series: the first in 1978, featuring wider wheel arches and an increased power output of 400-440 bhp, and the second between 1978 and 1982, with further enhancements. The first series cars participated in the 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans but faced mechanical failures. The second series, redesigned by Pininfarina, featured increased power (470-480 bhp), improved transmission and cooling, and a more aerodynamic body. This series saw some success in motorsports, including a class win at the 1981 24 Hours of Le Mans. A total of 25 series two cars were built. Despite their potential, the 512 BB LMs faced reliability issues and limited success due to inconsistent factory support, as they were raced by private teams. Post-competition, these cars have been active in vintage racing events.
