The Ferrari 857 S, produced in 1955, was developed to compete against the dominant Mercedes-Benz team. It was based on the 750 Monza chassis but featured an enlarged 3.4-liter engine by Lampredi, producing 280 hp. Despite these enhancements, the 857 S struggled to match the German team's performance, notably at the 1955 Tourist Trophy. However, it achieved some success, placing third at the 1955 Targa Florio with driver Castellotti and securing second place at the 1956 1000 km Buenos Aires with drivers Olivier Gendebien and Phil Hill.
